Top Pop Culture Moments in 2025 So Far

Laura Kane

The beginning of 2025 has been revolutionary for the music industry. Many female artists achieved huge milestones during the Grammys.

Doechii being the third black woman ever to win rap album of the year for her record Alligator bites never heal. The album has mixes of jazz R&B and musical theater aspects. Her lyrics are raw and unfiltered. Her Grammy performance featured her two most popular songs right now “Catfish” and “Denial is a River”.

Chappel Roan also took home a big win for new artist 2025! Her performance of “Pink Pony Club” blew everyone away.

We can't forget about the hilarious mix up with Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox and poppy.

Gojira ultimately ended up winning for best metal performance; but it was exciting for Spiritbox to be nominated twice now for a grammy.

Beyonce finally won album of the year for Cowboy Carter. Her Texas roots inspired the country aesthetic of the album and her outfits. Kendrick Lamar won the most grammys of anyone that night including song of the year for “Not Like Us”.

photo from NPR

Kendrick overall, had a very exciting start to 2025. His Super Bowl performance was one of the best in Super Bowl history. SZA, Samuel L Jackson and Serena Williams were all featured. It also wasn't just a performance, it was a protest. Pinpointing issues such as our political climate, racism and his feud with Drake.   WATCH IT HERE.

The Oscars had many musicals nominated this year including Wicked and Emilia Pérez. Emilia Pérez ended up winning the most Oscars of the night. Mick Jagger made an appearance to present the award for best original song. Miley Cyrus also attended to present the award for best sound. Music and film goes hand and hand. At the Oscars after party, Chappel Roan and Elton John performed “Pink Pony Club” and it was truly iconic. WATCH HERE.

To end this article I would also like to predict that “The Giver” by Chappel Roan will be my top song of 2025.

Review: “Version of You” By Zachary Wayne featuring Audrey Collins

Laura Kane

As summer comes to an end, so do love affairs and summer flings. Zachary Wayne from Peoria, Arizona teamed up with Audrey Collins for this heartbreaking ballad. The king of summertime took a break from partying in the sun to relate to some of us dealing with the end of summer blues. Wayne leads “Version of You” with his bluesy raspy toned voice. Collins joins mid song adding hints of pop and country intertwined. The music chemistry between the duo is shown through their clever lyrics; My favorite lyric being “Your tattooed all over me like a song stuck in my head.

If you'd like to give this record a listen it's available on all streaming platforms along with all of Wayne's other songs. Wayne is currently working on releasing a full album and got his start in the music industry from working with the band Crashing Revelry. He was Fortunate enough to go on tour. Zachary has worked extremely hard for all of his success thus far and appreciates all the support he can get.

Women's History Month is an Everyday Celebration: 10 Women in the Music Industry You Should Support

Laura Kane

I have had to learn a lot of lessons in life. I've dealt with grief, jealousy and even the joys of life. Music often helped me through those life lessons. Arguably the biggest lesson I've learned is how important it is for women to support women. From Brandie Carlile’s lyrics to Lauryn Shaffner’s work with Loudwire, I think I can speak for most women by saying Women's History month is an everyday celebration.

To continue the celebration, here are 10 women in the music industry who I think you should support…

Aubree Gomez

Founder Of MGG Media

Commonly known for running the Greta Van Fleet Bold n Gold event, Aubree Gomez is a girlboss when it comes to music management. Bold n Gold was a charity fan event that donated to Michigan's very own Hurleys Foundation. Aubree organized the whole event and created all the promos. From the incredible vendors to the rockin’ live music, she really outdid herself. Gomez has also worked with bands such as Mac Saturn and Loud Thoughts. She’s been on tour with Dirty Honey and has made connections with other incredible artists. MGG just turned one this past December. Through networking Aubree has been able to bring the Rock community together and her future looks bright.

Taylor Momsen

The Pretty Reckless

Taylor Momsen started her career as an actress from landing roles in The Grinch and the popular show Gossip Girl. Her acting career branched into modeling and music. Since 2008 Momsen has been the front woman of the famous rock band, The Pretty Reckless. Her signature snow white hair and deep gravelly voice make her the queen of hard rock. Rising to stardom with The Pretty Reckless’ 2010 album Light Me Up, Taylor earned her reputation in the music industry. Traveling the world and performing in front of vastly large audiences along with touring with some huge names in the music industry, Momsen rocks hard.

YOLA

Vastly known in the UK and speaking her truth through music, Yola is a one of a kind artist.

“Diamond Studded Shoes,” a song about the sad truths of our corrupt society, is her trademark song of her discography. Working with Brandi Carlile, Marren Morris and so many other powerful women to create “Highway Women” boosted her popularity in America. Her country soulful sounding vibe and honest lyrics make her songs iconic poems.

LIZZO

Lizzo is a 4 time grammy winner and an activist for the body positivity movement.  Her upbeat soulful songs about self love and female empowerment have reached the hearts of so many young women today. Her top song is “Special” featuring SZA showcases the beauty of humans being created equal but different. Realizing there are different figures, skin colors and sexualities makes everyone uniquely different yet we equally deserve the same basic human rights. “About Damn Time” gained popularity on the app Tiktok. Eventually it became the hot girl summer anthem. Lizzo can sing, rap and even play the flute which makes her one of the most diverse musicians today.

Lauryn Shaffner

Journalist for Loudwire

Lauryn is the youngest full-time writer for Loudwire. Interviewing bands such as The Black Crowes and Mammoth WVH, her connections go beyond the spectrum. Her talent, creativity and drive to make her interviews and projects the best they can be is coherent when you see the finished product. Doing little projects such as The GOAT and the history of bands in 60 seconds, Shaffner’s creative approach is what Loudwire needs. She is a huge inspiration for everyone on the Banded Staff and we are rooting her on as we watch her career with Loudwire blossom.

Taylor Balding

Photographer for Staged Haze and Musaholic Magazine

Taylor Balding’s inspirations come from Hannah Wicklund and Greta Van Fleet, her two favorite shows she's photographed. Taylor’s photos draw you in like you're actually at the concert. Her edits add that extra spice and drama, making her one of a kind. She shines the most when she's in the photo pit almost like it's a dream come true. She graduates from college in May and hopes to pursue concert photography as a full time job.

Brandi Carlile

LGBTQ+ activist and proud mama, Brandi Carlile conquers the music industry with her unique talent. The nine time grammy winner has a soulful rock voice with some country twang. Being an incredible role model to her two daughters and women all over the world, her unapologetic energy and badass performances are what make her such a loveable musician. “The Joke” is a song about loving yourself and overcoming fear and judgment. My favorite song by her is “Broken Horses” . The melody and harmonies are like having an out of body experience. Her lyrics are like poetry and there's no one out there making music like she does.

Candrika Rice

Bassist of Lylyth

Candrika Rice from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is a domestic abuse activist and creates music with her band Lylyth to empower women. Playing concerts to raise money for domestic abuse survivors along with suicide prevention organizations, Rice is a true rock n roll queen. The song “Fight Back” was Lylyth’s first ever released song. Unfortunately with Roe V Wade being overturned Drika and her band knew they had to raise their voices. Candrika’s energy on stage is equivalent to Victoria De Angelis bass player of Maneskin. Drika’s big heart, talent and funny personality is what makes her so incredible.

Rihanna

The first pregnant women to perform at the super bowl halftime show, 9 time Grammy winner and 33 time nominee there's no one like Rhianna. “We found love” is her most popular song. If you grew up in the 2010s then you probably know half of her discography. Songs such as “Umbrella” and “Diamonds” shaped me. She worked with Paul McCartney and Kanye West for the song “FourFiveSeconds” which was a unique trio to say the least. Rhianna is a trailblazer for women of color in the music and beauty industry and continues to feed us with her incredible work on and off the stage.

Cassie Irene

Banded’s very own Cassie Irene does a little bit of everything in the music industry. At Banded, her sole focus is photography. When she's not in the photo pit, she’s at home creating songs of her own. Cassie is the perfect example of working outside the box. There is no perfect way to work in the music industry. Once you're in it, you're in it no matter how you contribute to it. Her two songs “Vampire” and “The March” are available on all streaming platforms and there's more to come.

Feed your angst this Valentine's day with POET The Band's “Miss Misery”

Laura Kane

Are you tired of Valentine's day? Did your partner just walk out on you, steal all your life savings and your dog? If you answered yes then i'd like you to meet POET The Band. They call themselves an independent DIY hard rock band since they record and produce all their songs and music videos independently. Their latest single “Miss Misery” is for the folks feeling depressed and heartbroken this Valentine's season.

Bringing metal and pop elements together, POET creates a unique sound to alternative and hard rock. Including heavy lyrics such as “I've been searching for so long been stuck at the bottom”: at some point in life we will experience loneliness and heartbreak. As humans we have the ability to love but with that ability comes depression, anxiety and isolation. “Got me feeling fucked up like im ready to die”: everyone has demons their trying to overcome. Rejection cuts like a knife, we all want to be loved but unfortunately the more we crave love from others who don't love us back we become drained from the ability to love ourselves. The added vocal elements create the image of lead singer Aiden Shaw crying for help. Sometimes it feels like no matter how loud we scream no one can hear us. Sometimes screaming into the universe is the best therapy.

Love yourselves this valentines day and make sure to let the ones who love you know you love them back.

If you or someone you know needs support, please check out the Suicide Prevention Hotline HERE.

Your New Favorite Self Love Anthem: “You Wish by Trev Lukather

Laura Kane

Starting off the new year with his debut song, “You Wish,” Trev Lukather expands his solo music career into the sonic depths of the 80s. Using wider and fuller sounding drum reverbs started this song off perfectly. Adding a more vintage display from the large sound of the synthesizer and complex guitar riffs are what make “You Wish” a banger. The production that went into the creation of this tune has a mix of today's pop almost defining it as glam rock. Self liberation is the message that lies beneath the surface on this track, or is it the sad reality of wanting to be something we’re not: “Cause you can’t be me and I know you wish”.

After many years of working with the likes of  Lindsay Lohan and Halestorm, Lukather started on his own projects. He formed the band LEVERA which unfortunately disbanded right after their first album release. “You wish” is his coming of age masterpiece or his way of becoming his own established artist which adds the message of being “Unapologetically Himself”: “Im set free when you're lying to yourself in the midst”. With the inspiration from his dad Steve Lukather of TOTO and his mom Marie Currie twin sister of Cherrie Currie from The Runaways. Trev had some tremendous help with creating “You Wish”,  from big names such as Steve Maggiora of TOTO and Jake Hayden of Dorothy. Keep a look out for Trev’s first solo album Invisible Friends coming soon in 2023.

Greta FAN Fleet: 10 Inspiring GVF Fan Artists Making Their Mark

Laura Kane

Over the past two years dating back to October of 2020, Greta Van Fleet’s era with The Battle at Gardens Gate brought a certain group of individuals together. “My Way Soon” being their first single set the brand as living a free and exciting life through love and light.

In June of 2021, I had been going through a lonely transition in my life. I had just graduated high school and was working a 9 to 5 office job. I had no plans of going to college any time soon and had almost no friends. I was lost, and felt like a loser. Until one day, I was in the car with my sister, and she played “Rolling in the deep”, except it was the Greta Van Fleet version. Out of every song I could've heard, the cover of “Rolling in the deep” was the first time I heard Josh Kiszka sing. Most people would say the first Greta Van Fleet song they heard was “Highway Tune” or “You’re The One”. But mine was the “Rolling in the Deep” cover. I suppose that makes my story more unique. I ignored it just thinking they were some dumb cover band.

Many days later I was scrolling on Tik Tok and saw this strange looking curly haired dude singing on my for you page. At first, I thought it was Pete Davidson in a wig, because it was a performance on Saturday Night Live. More and more everyday I kept seeing that same video until I realized it was Greta Van Fleet. I finally sat down and listened to their whole discography and many live performances. Since then I’ve been hooked.

My life became brighter as I met people from all over the world due to our love for 4 guys from Michigan. I traveled to places all over the United States as my love for music, nature, art and humanity grew stronger. I became inspired to become a music journalist and realized that it's what I want to do for the rest of my life. Over the past year I've come to accept and love that I am a fangirl especially when it comes to fan art.

These 10 artists started with passion and love in their hearts and nothing but the basic materials for a simple painting, drawing, or a makeup look. Going into it as just a fun hobby, they are now making money and have built small businesses for themselves. After sitting down and chatting with the powerful, loving, and talented women featured in this article, I realize that the Greta Van Fleet community was brought together to inspire, love, and unite through the good and the dark times.

Sarah Sharpe

of

SSharpeArt

19 year old Sarah Sharpe from Toronto, Ontario captures the boys of Greta Van Fleet with her captivating portraits. In 2020 Sarah was going through a rough patch and had lost a lot of creative inspiration. Being a full time student at Guelph university and pursuing her dreams of being a veterinarian, art was not one of her priorities. After finding Greta Van Fleet she got her groove back. Happy to have found some inspiration, her first piece was the “Heat Above” Sam Kiszka portrait.

Originally just creating for fun there was a huge demand for her art. She created “Heat Above” inspired portraits for Josh, Jake, and Danny as that became her first collection. She’s thankful for the inspiration from GVF and the abundance of love from fans as she feels seen and understood through her art. She creates art because of the connections and friendships she has made as the money is secondary. You can support Sarah’s art by following her on Instagram and shopping her Etsy here.

After finding Greta Van Fleet and retiring from her dance career she created her etsy shop SadGirlDoesCrafts. Mostly creating fan art for Greta Van Fleet fans, her brilliant art is inspired by nature, other peoples art, and her own emotions.

Being a former dancer has also made a huge impact on her art as well. The people in her pieces are based off of her as she is the model for the majority of her creations. You can see she does many dance poses especially in her “Heat Above” and “Broken Bells” pieces.

Katie has also designed many tattoos and does commission pieces of all kinds. This quote from Katies Etsy struck me in the heart: “If I don’t do something creative everyday my soul dies a little. You’re really just helping me out here”. Go support Katie! She appreciates all of the love and support she can get. Follow her on Instagram and shop here.

Joella Malfitano

of

Iykyk Merch

By now, you have most likely spotted a famous Iykyk Merch graphic shirt somewhere. Joella Malfitano is conquering the art community with her trendy vintage collage style shirts. There is an extremely high demand for her items which makes her one of the more notable artists listed here. More and more everyday her numbers rise. What started out as a fun project has turned into a serious high fashion business. One of her first purchases was made by her now close friend Ally and she has made so many more lifelong connections through it all.

What really inspires her art are fandoms but specifically the Greta Van Fleet community. When she first found Greta there was not a lot of Fan art out there, so she made it herself. Her biggest dream as of right now is to move to Nashville and start making more connections in the music industry. She hopes to work with bands and artists to capture photos of her own for her iconic shirts to make her art even more original. Through her designs she has been able to showcase the work of many photographers such as Paige Sara, which has been a dream come true.

She was fortunate enough to give Josh a decorative tambourine which she worked so hard on and she really appreciates the guys of Greta Van Fleet and all the opportunities and inspiration that have come her way from their music. Follow Iykyk on Instagram and shop here.

Alyxandria Wiseman

of Shop Pearl Designs

Alyxandria Wiseman is inspired by Jake Kiszka, from his suit designs down to his guitar technique.

She embodies everything about Jake into her artwork. Alyx does everything from jean jackets to jewelry, and even takes commission orders. Alyx also had the opportunity to be a vendor at the Greta Van Fleet fan event. She was fortunate enough to work with the Kiszka and the Wagner Families along with some of the small business owners in Frankenmuth.

Alyx has only had her shop open since June of 2022 but has networked herself into a bright future for her business. Currently she has taken a break from selling everyday items on her etsy shop due to having a surplus of commission orders. Working day and night on her art, she is so thankful for all the support. Follow her on Instagram and shop here.

Ashley Frame

of Stay Crafty AF

In my opinion, Ashley Frame is the sticker queen. Her cute and creative stickers have taken over the Greta Van Fleet community. After coming out of a dark period in her life, Ashley found GVF which led to her opening her Etsy shop. Her husband and friends have been her biggest supporters through it all.

She doesn't just sell stickers though. What gives her etsy shop a unique edge is her coloring books. Each coloring book has themes of many Greta Van fleet songs depicting what they look like. In September she was a vendor at the Greta Van Fleet fan event where she gave Dan Wagner a very special coloring book. Dan’s face lit up and said “You know who would really love this my son Daniel”. That interaction was so heartwarming and she's very thankful she got the opportunity to share her art with Danny Wagner's dad. Greta Van Fleet has brought Ashley so many lifelong friends and it brings her so much joy to create art and run a business.

Review: The Intrusion Releases Debut Single, “Gemstone Eyes”

Laura Kane

From St. Louis Missouri, I introduce you to The Intrusion! Their debut single “Gemstone eyes” was released today and it’s a really cool and awesome song. This four-piece band is led by lead singer Max Michael along with his band mates Simon Wacker on bass, Logan Tyler on guitar and Preston Schepers on drums. They formed in 2021 and since have been playing at small venues around the St. Louis area.

“Gemstone Eyes” has a lot of blues infusion. Max Michaels has a huge range and very smooth earthy sounding voice which is perfect for the blues. The blues is the main root to rock n roll and that’s very prevalent in this song. “Gemstone eyes” is about being so infatuated with a woman that you can’t even function. “One look in your eyes girl I can barely walk”. Sometimes when you love a woman its dangerous and it hurts so good.

Can you see what I see with your dreadful love for me”. The guitar solo reminds me of some of Hannah Wicklund’s music, its grungy but it still has that 70s vibe to it. My favorite part is the ending when Max hits his high notes with “Gemstone Eyes”. This strong debut single sets the bar really high with strong story telling and an awesome guitar solo.

Review: Crashing Revelry Singles “Poison” and “That’s My Story”

Laura Kane

“Poison cuz it numbs all the pain” my favorite lyric in Crashing Revelry’s new song “Poison”.

Crashing Revelry is a country hard rock band from Arizona. When I first heard “Poison” I said it sounds like Chris Stapleton and Aerosmith had a baby. As I listen to it more and more every day, I find different elements of hard rock and even metal added to the flavor of the song. It’s hard to label Crashing Revelry as anything because of lead singer Brandon Johnson. Johnson is a country singer and almost sounds like Chad Kroeger lead singer of Nickelback but has the smoothness of Christ Stapleton.

“That’s My Story” originally written and performed by Collin Raye now has a heavy rock version thanks to Crashing Revelry. It still has its original country sound with Brandon’s country vocals and its Crashing Revelry twist with the electric guitar replacing the 80s synthesizer.

If you’re ever looking for a cool band T-shirt or a unique coffee blend Crashing Revelry has all their unique merch up on their website. Go show them the support and love they need right now. I love following newer smaller bands because they really are creating art simply because they love it. The guys of Crashing Revelry love creating music and I can’t wait to see where their passions take them.

Review: Frankford Fitler Moving On Spring EP

Laura Kane

Inspired mostly by Rush and Jimi Hendrix, Tyler Cole and Randy Wilson have been taking over the city of Philadelphia with their first ever EP Moving On. Playing at mostly local bars in the Philadelphia area they’ve gained their nationwide following with funny tiktoks and instagram giveaways. Joining bands such as Greta Van Fleet and The Naked Gypsy Queens, Frankford Fitler is not only bringing the 70s back through their incredible music but through their clothing as well. Tyler is often seen wearing flowing flare plants and cowboy fringe while performing. Tyler is the lead singer and lead guitar player. He plays a Gibson flying V and a Gibson acoustic to get that natural 70s sound and 70s look. Randy Wilson is his wingman on the drums. Their unique Frankford Fitler logo is printed out in bold on Randys Ludwig drum kit.

Their EP has 4 big songs on it. Starting off with “Moving on,” then my favorite “Loved you All Along,” and lastly “Heartstruck” and “Highest Mountain”. They each flow together with different Psychedelic and folky aspects. “Loved you All Along’ is my favorite because I love emotional acoustic songs about the beauty of woman. The musical aspect of the song is spot on. The organ harmonies are what put it all together giving it its Folky gospel sound. “Moving On” Is a cowboy coming of age song. To me it’s about a young cowboy moving on and finding his success as he’s coming into adulthood.  My prediction is that “Moving on” is going to be the main star to their up-coming album as they are coming into adulthood and chasing their dreams in the music industry.

I’m excited to see where Tyler and Randy take their music and I hope they make their way over to Pittsburgh for a performance.

REVIEW: Ranae Releases New Album, Nemophilist

Laura Kane

Starting my music journalism career in 2022 has been a blessing, especially when I discover new artists such as Ranae. Coming out with their second album Nemophilist, Ranae is incomparable with their songwriting and beautiful melodies.

Nemophilist is a unique and complex folk rock album. Listening to this album connected me with earth and the powers of mother nature. Songs like “The Raven” and “Mother” mention themes of the power of nature and woman and how they are connected.

My favorite song “Nemophilist” represents this album not only with it being the title track but also with its message of the struggles of what humanity is currently going through. Being human is hard, there is judgement and hate everywhere We are divided through war, global warming, and politics. But through the ugliness, nature and love is what makes life worth living. The lyric “The earth is just the earth” reminds us that we are just humans living on this beautiful rock, so just live your best life.

The beauty of “Nemophilist” is that it’s message can be interpreted in many different ways. This album makes me want to throw my phone away and live off the grid. It is perfect for a Spring morning or a rainy Spring evening. It’s a breakup album but a happy album at the same time.

Ranea is a storyteller and unique artist. If you’d like to give Nemophilist and more of Ranea’s music a listen, check them out is on Spotify, Youtube, itunes, and Apple music.

The Importance of Black History in the Music: 28 Artists + Their Impact

Laura Kane

When you think of rock music, your mind usually thinks of Led Zeppelin or the Beatles. What most people do not realize is the origin of rock music came from black blues artists. Black musicians have shaped the music industry through social change, poetry, and the creativity of the sonic sound of blues rock and Rock N Roll jazz, along with other genres of music.

In the late 1800’s, Blues music became popular amongst slaves. Blues was mostly popular in states such as Mississipi and Louisiana during the great migration of slave workers. Blues rock was especially popular during the civil rights movement in the late 50s through the early 60s. Their poetic lyrics discussed topics of racism, segregation, and social change. Jazz and Soul became very popular during the Harlem renaissance around the time of the great depression. Musicians protested through their music. Artists such as Donna summer, Sam Cooke, and Etta James are known for being some of the most creative and outstanding black musicians in the music industry.

For Black History Month, I listened to 28 different black musicians. Here is the list and what I learned about them…

February 1st Aretha Franklin: Respect is what everyone should be giving to Aretha Franklin. Some of her greatest hits are “Respect’, “I say a little prayer”, and my personal favorite “You make me feel like a natural woman”. Josh Kiszka, the lead singer of Greta van fleet has said in many interviews that he sings along to Aretha Franklin songs before he performs because it calms him down. Franklin was a trailblazer in the music industry and will never be forgotten.

February 2nd Jimi Hendrix: Although he did not live very long, Jimi Hendrix released some of the most iconic music in rock history. His most Iconic album is 1967s Are You Experienced. Hendrix was one of the first black musicians to turn blues rock into rock n roll. He’s influenced many musicians such George Clinton and John Mayer. Jimi Hendrix died at the early age of 27 and is missed by many.

February 3rd Ronnie Spector: We can all collectively agree that the world was shook when legend Ronnie Spector died on January 12th. She is most commonly known for her music group The Ronettes and their iconic song “Be My Baby”. Known as the “Bad girl of Rock”, Spector inspired musician Amy Winehouse and many other female musicians.

February 4th Sam Cooke: His music career started at church. Gospel music was a huge inspiration for him as he joined Soul Stirrers, a popular gospel group in the 50s. Through prayer and music Cooke was a huge activist against racism and violence. “A Change is Gonna come” brought up the trauma of racism but also hope for the future. Cooke was the first black musician to be involved with the business and marketing sides of the industry and brought people of all races together.

February 5th Elmore James: Known as “King of the slide guitar” Elmore James inspired artists such as The Rolling stones and Eric Clapton. James released hit songs such as “The Sky is Crying” and “Shake Your Money Maker”. In 1980 he was inducted into The Blues Hall of Fame. In 1992, he was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

February 6th Muddy Waters: Inducted into The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, Muddy waters was known as a post war blues musician. His most popular song “I’m your Hoochie Coochie Man” has unique a sexy blues sound that gives the song an iconic vibe. Waters was most known for performing in small Chicago bars as he enjoyed more intimate performances.

February 7th Little Richard: Not only was he a music icon but he was also a fashion icon. Known for his very flashy outfits, little Richard was a trend setter. He inspired Elton John when it came to his fashion choices and his skillful piano playing.
